All of this led me to the (perhaps false) conclusion that the timing
gear/chain had jumped a notch, and was probably worn out. Which made me
suspicious of the whole motor. But now according to you and Gordon and a
whole lot of other people, this is probably not what's wrong at all. I
strongly suspect that the oil pump was put in one tooth off from it's
intended position. I've never done this procedure, but I've seen the book on
the subject, and I can see where it could happen.
Anyway, I think (now) that I'll just leave the timing where it is, and get on
with the rest of the project. The simple stuff like sandblasting, priming,
dent removal, rust removal, replacing the hinge in the hood, filling in the
two holes over the cab where lights apparently were at one time. Etc. etc.
etc.
Thanks for all of your help on this subject. It's really great to have a
place to ask this type question. Thank you Arthur for the forum.
