Regarding recent discussions about military paint, I'll throw in my two
cents worth. I found that the semi-gloss OD of the "cheep variety"
(ie.Gillespie brand sold by RAPCO and a few others) is much more resistant
to scratches and general wear if you add a catalyst hardener (NAPA synthetic
enamel catalyst is compatible). On the down side is an undesirable side
effect of toooooo much of a glossy apearance. With a little experimenting I
found that if you add an additional amount of flatening agent equivilant in
weight to the weight of the added hardener, the extra flatening agent will
cancel out the extra glossiness! The end result is a durable catalized
paint with no added gloss, in a price range not even close to automotive
paint. Ask your NAPA dealer for the catalist and flattening additive for
synthetic enamel paint. Of course we all know how drying conditions effect
the glossiness of semi-gloss OD paint. So, I would suggest if you use this
formula to apply the first coat, let it flash off, then adjust the amount of
flattening agent to your own personal taste on the final coat, since
humidity and drying time play a big part in the amount of gloss you end up
with.
