I am going to start installing the left front axle shaft on my '43 GPW this
weekend. The prior owner apparently broke the axle shaft and simply
removed the broken shaft...never putting in a replacement (making it a
3X4?). Anyway, I find no info on replacing the shaft in the manual. I
would appreciate any suggestions, warnings, how-to's, etc. information that
you experts can give me. I need to replace the steering knuckle too...but
that seems straight forward.

If the axle shaft broke off at the spline end inside the differential
housing, you would be wise to rebuild that diffy completely. There is a good
chance that there are shards of metal and other ugly things floating around
in there now. You might want to investigate exactly how the previous owner
managed to break that shaft in the first place.
