Not being a landrover person (Dodges forever !) I did have occasion to
visit Cuthbertson's yard in Biggar (Scottish border country, about 50
miles from me) and see the original prototype that is still there. They
made it with mini wheels and it ended up more than a little like my Tucker
Sno-Cat in outline, but to get the tracks steered they had to do a fair
amount of work beefing up the steering system, particularly the drop arms,
and added quite a chunky power steering system too.
The end result was that although the track units were removable in theory,
it took so much work that it was easier to tow them around on a trailer
and just use them 'as is'. Don't know about the sales of them, but I
suspect few went to anywhere other than the Ministry of Defence, as they
were primarily aimed at air crash rescue and the like.
I have an image of a yellow one which I have already distributed to a
couple of people that wanted to see it. Anyone that wants a copy just
e-mail me off-list, unless anyone has a site that will take the image and
display it for all to see ?
