Many thanks to all those who responded and here is the fix. This is
totally unscientific and was born of:
A. Desperation
B. Final acceptance that the sender was, indeed, shot.
You may find this hard to believe but....................I subjected the
sender to the dreaded blowtorch, until I started to smell hot neoprene from
the seal. I then held it above my head and dropped it on to the tiled
floor of my office - twice.
The following (this) morning, I fitted the sender back in the engine as the
vehicle had to be moved, topped up the water level and backed the truck out
into the driveway and left it running whilst I went back in to get my
overalls on and when I returned, the gauge was reading 140 F.
I don't actually know how they operate internally but there seems to be
some evidence of them sticking after they have been lying around for a few
years. The date of manufacture was 1989.
Anyone had similar experiences?
Many thanks to all once again.
