The confusion about the notion of 'not used during WW2' stems from the comment
in AAW; I believe Ray Cowdery meant to say "not applied at the factory" or
"by official orders" possibly. They were, however, applied in the field.
There are numerous wartime photographs of such TP markings, on British
jeeps and otherwise. A quick look through Jeudy & Tararine, reveals
the following such marked jeeps:
Jeep used in the liberation of La Rochelle (p.53)
French jeep carrying De Gaulle, 14th June 1944. (p.83)
British jeep carrying Queen Elizabeth, 21st May 1944 (p.88)
British army jeep with stretcher frame and cover (p.156)
In Havers' "Jeep Pictorial" -
Canadian ambulance jeeps, p.22, 23
I haven't seen any wartime photos of US jeeps with TP markings, but have
not looked extensively.
