[MV] Why air over hydraulic brakes?

It probably sounds silly, but I don't understand the advantage to this
system over either one of them alone.
Also, I hooked up the brakes on my M103A3 today, and air was leaking in the
"thing" that converts the air pressure to hydraulic for the brakes on the
trailer, are parts hard to get for them?
Still no luck finding any one that can make or has the canvas for this
trailer, reasonably.
Any ideas?
