Associated Press (AP)--July 14, 1999-- JEFFERSON, MISSOURI--In what seems
like a weekend adventure gone wrong, four farmers from a local grange in
Nevada, Missouri, were detained Sunday for several hours after trying to
drive their 52 Chevy pickup up to Jefferson to take some pictures in front
of the local town hall. Police officers were taken back and drew their
weapons when the four farmers arrived at the town hall steps with several
menacing looking pitchforks mounted to the cab of the old chevrolet. "I
hardly had time to act," said Barney Fife, one of the three police officersm
who feared for their lives. The leader of the civil rights group, the
NAACP, Quasi Enfume', is calling for lawsuits of all pitchfork manufacturers
in the midwest and middle-southern United States. "We must unite against
the fear of deadly pitchforks," raged Quasi Enfume'. "Only when all
pitchforks are registered will we be able to walk the streets without fear!"
The four farmers were questioned and released. One farmer noted, "we didn't
know we were breaking any laws by trying to pose for a picture. No body
told us pitchforks were supposed to be registered with the BATF." --End
