You don't _have_ to do this.

Set the engine to No 1 firing (nominally No 1 TDC inlet and exhaust closed,
compression stroke.

Re-fit and engage the distributor, swing it to give points just opening and
where the rotor arm points in the cap connect this outlet to No 1 and the rest
of the leads in the correct firing order and rotation from this, sometimes leads
have to be swopped to get the length.
