Someone sent me this and I thought I would pass some of it on. I guess
we all must admit that a sale is really going to happen. Now I would
like to see a discussion on some of the other issues. I can't see
giving $20,000 for what has been described, i.e. bare M998's with no
doors no top no seat cover etc., with rusted frames and off road use
only. Add this to not knowing the condition of any of the vital parts,
i.e. motor, trans, fuel system, brakes etc. and no test drive. I'm
thinking $5000 to $10000. What do the rest of you think? Are there
really 300 of you that plan to go and pay $20000? And what about this
frame problem with 1985's.

Michael,
Saw your post on the web about the auction. I am not listed with the
mailing list, so I cant post this info. Feel free to do it for me if you

think it would be of benefit to the list.

I am a registered auto dealer signed up with the Manheim Auction
Network. The
former USMC HMMWV's are being auctioned off in a special event at the
Atlanta
GA Burns Brothers Manheim Auction on August 11. These vehicles are
issued
with a Form MV-907A Salvage Title. The years for the HMMWV's are 1985,
1986,
and 1987.Mileage varies from as low as 723 to 37,738 miles. A partial
listing
of vehicles for sale is at:
http://www.govservices.com/hummer/hummer.html

A full page ad was taken out in the July 19, 1999 issue of Automotive
News.
It specifically states "DEALER ONLY AUCTION". This is because Manheim
Auctions sell only to registered dealers, not the public. As such, the
rules
and regulations for buying/selling are much more detailed. This auction
location specializes in goverment and GSA vehicles (Post Office Jeeps,
Gov't
fleets, etc). If you are not a registered dealer, please do not call the

auction and ask for more info. Their phones are already ringing off the
hook
for this sale of Hummers.

In any event, it is up to the dealer who purchases the units, what they
will
do with them. There are currently over 400 HMMWV's at the auction ready
to be
sold in August. Time, money, and location problems will prevent us from
being
there. Wish I could get one! Rumored price at auction is estimated at
$22,500
each, as is for a Model M-998 (not M-998A1 or A2). Add on shipping to
your
location, auction fee's, titling, paperwork, and dealer profit for all
the
work. Than these will surely need additional work to pass state DMV
spec's.
Also, many parts are missing/broken/rusted on them. +++more cash+++.
Well,
you get the idea. But the stated mileages are very low considering these
are
around 15 years old. As long as they arent cannabalized ot too rusted
from
sitting around, they could be a good deal. Hope this helps all. It is a
first
for the Military Hummer to be legally sold on the open market. A piece
of MV
history to be sure!
