Jon et al,
What traditional North American democracy implies is an inherent right
to the private ownership of just about anything. It was founded upon the
principle that human beings are capable of taking responsibility for
their own actions, and need a government only to ratify disputes and
organize the defense of the populace against enemies from within and
without. This philosophy alone makes the United States unique in the
history of nations... as a Canadian, I can cheerfully admit that we kept
the best of both the North American independent traditions and British
rule of law (up here that's all gone now, but not subject to debate
here).
My point is, we here in NA have been brought up differently than most of
you in the rest of the world. For better or worse - we are not without
our faults. But we cherish this heritage, and react strongly when some
bleeding-heart, holier-than-thou politician threatens to remove these
implied rights! Human beings CAN be responsible if permitted to be so.
In the United States, British Common Law - which effectively stated the
common man can do anything which isn't otherwise proscribed - has been
taken a step further. I think it's been a largely successful experiment.
In much of the rest of the world, social law permits one to do only that
which is permitted. North Americans will not stand for that view of life
(I hope!). The current crop of socialist politicians have expended
untold energy on trying to proscribe that which THEY don't like; our job
as citizens is to keep them in their place. This is, truly, a democracy
OF the people. So far.
Let's keep it that way.
