For details on Mahindra see their website at
http://www.mahindraworld.com/index3.html. Note they are still making
variants of the CJ3.

Throughout the 1960's and early 1970's, Kaiser Jeep International Sales
Corporation sold Jeeps in approximately 85 countries. In some cases,
vehicles were manufactured locally either by Kaiser or under license, but
often they were assembled (shipped from Toledo) and included some local
content. There were many hybrid vehicles such as drive train from Toledo
and local finished product, including hand "stamped" bodies in countries
like Turkey. In several countries, Jeep was the dominant vehicle
manufacturer usually operating with a local partner in a joint venture. In
most of these countries, Jeeps were sold as both civilian and military
vehicles.

Local content laws and import duties influenced vehicle configurations.
For instance, in Australia, Jeeps were assembled with engines from Toyota
while in South Africa they shared an assembly line and some parts with BMW.

Regarding the Mahindra vehicles, please note they do not conform to U.S.
emission or safety standards, making licensing problematic. In the last
contact I had with Mahindra & Mahindra, they were looking for a U.S.
partner/importer, who was willing to go through the various certification
processes to begin U.S. distribution. They were very concerned about
potential liability from "rollover" lawsuits.
