A worthy warning but be advised the gas produced by a charging battery beyond
the gas point is actually two molecules of hydrogen with one of oxygen or H2 + O
and thus in the perfect atomic proportions to make water rather violently if
ignited.

You're lucky only the battery cover moves, when I inadvertently found this
highly explosive mixture in 1962, both sides of the battery blew cleanly out
followed by a small tidal wave of sulphuric acid, bad enough that my 19 set now
had no power supply but it happened to be in my bedroom.

Shortly afterwards the carpet disintegrated to dust closely followed by the
kitchen ceiling below and my parents had a severe sense of humour failure, as
they do.
