Thanks to all of those who posted me on and off list with leads, advice and
other help in my search for a WW2 jeep. I finally bought one! Looks nice,
runs great, and is mostly complete. It also comes with many extras,
including a transportation trailer. I got to figure out where to put THAT!
It only needs some odds and ends and the engine compartment is missing a few
things and/or is not original.
Body is in good but not great shape but appears to be repairable under many
coats of paint. I am also considering a replacement body tub as I am not
much in the body work department. I would appreciate any advice from some of
you experts out there on if the body tubs are worthwhile. How close are they
to the original? Do they have the correct characteristics for a Ford vs. a
Willy's? How "correct" are they for a particular year of manufacture? There
seems to be available MB as well as GPW versions of the bodies. I have a '42
GPW. I understand Bensinger's has them and have looked on their web site.
They have available most components and/or complete body kits. Are they
worth the money? Can anyone offer any advice about
purchasing/installing/preparing for painting etc?
The engine compartment has a few areas in need of attention. I don't know
alot about engine blocks on these things but I am pretty sure the cylinder
head marked "Jeep" in relief is not an original component. It is missing the
horn and some other things. Anyone know where I can get a servicable head?
How about a horn? What would I expect to pay for the head (I never saw any
advertaised)? Horns are about $90-$100 right?
It does not have combat spilt rims. I would certainly like to replace the
solid rims (probably from an M38). Not that the existing ones look bad
but... oh well I think some of you know what I mean :) Has anyone seen these
for sale ANYWHERE? I cant find anything in any publications or on the net
and have never seen any at a show (but I haven't been to many). What would I
expect to spend on five of these? Are repros available?
It has a machine gun post mounted. However, all of the ones that I have seen
at shows and in books and whatnot appear to have various protuberances and
braces for the post and a means of supporting the weapon in travel
configuration. This post is basically just that: a post without any fittings
and so forth welded or attached. It didn't have a pintle mounted on top
either. Its just a green post. Any comments? Could it be real or did
sombody weld a piece of tube steel to a plate?
Thank you all in advance for your help.
Regards,
Bob Kelly
