Re: [MV] M38A1 need both front fenders

I had much the same situation with my A1. Both front fenders were flush =
straight down with the grill. It appeared it spent a lot of its after =
military life crashing through trees. Anyway, being a somewhat early =
example with transitional front grill, bolted to the frame but still with =
the hinged attach points for the folding type, I decided to try and keep =
as many of the original body parts as possible. And I am glad I did. The =
fenders vary quite a bit throughout the various years, with different =
reinforcing ribs and fabrication techniques. What I did was have a metal =
fabricator straighten and weld some small reinforcement flat stock behind =
the folds that had consequently rusted through after being bent. Then he =
built up the metal in the area until flush with the rest of the fender. A =
small amount of bondo had to be used to smooth it all out. They turned =
out great and unless you squeeze between the tire and fender and look up, =
you can't tell, yet all the factory reinforcement ribs are still in-place =
and visible. I am under the impression that the more you use from the =
original vehicle, the more accomplishment and satisfaction you will have =
in the final, original product. If one trashes all of the original stuff =
and replaces with aftermarket (etc.) then screws the data plates on, is it =
really worth more than one with original fenders, hood, etc. that have =
been rebuilt/reworked/refabricated? Who knows, no flames please, it is a =
statement of personal preference that I try to follow, unless it becomes =
way too cost prohibitive. At any rate, good luck with your project, =
regardless of which direction you go. And speaking of bumperettes =
(previous thread), does anyone have some or know where to get a couple of =
originals?
Thanks,
Sean

If you can pick up some good used ones, do it. I've seen NOS and repros =
that run about 200 250. Surplus City is asking 260 apiece. Good luck.

I am about to buy a 1954 M38A1 that has two crushed and rusted front =
fenders
on both sides. Does anyone know of where I can find some replacements
either used or new?
I think the hood is fairly repairable, however if a cheap one came
available I might also buy it. Thanks For your help.

This list is great!

Thanks
