Re: [MV] M37/M715 WINCH QUESTION

I'll start by saying I don't know ANYTHING about the Braden LU-4 winch used
on M37/'715, all my experience is with the Garwood used on bigger vehicles,
but in their case, the "clutch" is not fiberous at all, hence can't be oil
soaked. In fact is solid metal, and runs in oil.

Will the winch cable run out under power? Or do you have to hand spool it
off?
Did it work properly before being serviced?

On 6x6 winch cable travel direction is controled by lever in cab, if 4x4
works same way, shift cab lever to "wind" then get out & make sure PTO shaft
is turning. If not maybe something is misadjusted in PTO shift linkage.

IF PTO is turning, listen for "rattle" at winch housing. PTO shaft will also
"flop" at joint nearest winch housing. This could indicate a sheared shear
pin, which will also be indicated by your inability to power out the cable as
well. If this is the case, replace the shear pin ONLY with the specified pin.

Ruling both of these out, are the controls on the winch housing traveling to
the required points? Is it possible lever not correctly located on shaft,
thus improperly limiting control travel?

After this we must look inside of winch for source of trouble.

Hope this helps,
David Doyle
