We in Washington State, have permission to use studded tires everywhere from
November through March. Chains are OK whenever we need them. Yes it wears
down asphalt and concrete but affords great traction especially on the hills
around this state. We must also realize that steel studs, cable and link
chains can also make you slide more easily even on a 4wd MV. Two sets of
chains on an MV chugging through snow and ice is a beautiful site!

Interesting as there are states in the west that close roads in the
winter under certain conditions to people and trucks who do not have chains
on their tires.
