Sounds like the end play for your axles was not set right. Page 184 of TM 9-803 gives very precise instructions on setting end play. I doubt full length bushings will be worth the effort, especially if you use locking hubs. I would be afraid of seizing when the hubs are not locked. If you don't use locking hubs, this does not matter.
