The Humvee's first off are all "born" the same way. Same engine and chassis.
However; the civilian one is a bit more refined. By this I mean they have
more insulation, better instrumentation, and the A/C is kind of built into a
fiberglass shroud on the back of the engine in the passenger compartment.
Transmission has a "park" in it and the doors are better too. They figured
that the "park" position wasn't needed for battle conditions, as it is less
confusing when shifting from "R" to "D". Civvy models are 12 volt systems
as opposed to 24 volt military and lighting group is tailored to DOT specs.
Yes, many GI's wear ear plugs because they are as noisey as a 151 jeep and
after a long drive, you are glad to get out of it! One other thing about a
military Hummer, if you are not used to the fan clutch kicking in, it will
scare you if you are not expecting it! (Kicks in-loud shriek of fan belts
and roars) Many greenhorn GI Hummer drivers have pulled over and stopped in
a convoy for this and the faster you are going-the louder the fan clutch.
Now, about the "metal top" you want. These will not normally come through a
DRMO and is not just a metal top. This is an armament top that will weigh
about 2000 pounds. It has a machine gun turret on top of the hatch which
will make this is a controlled item. When found complete, it will be a
pricey item in the mid-four figures. When used, you will have to change
your coil springs to heavier ones. When 20P and 34P's are found, they are
really worth about $50 apiece. Finding them for less is a nice find!

I would like to find a set of radial tires for one myself. If anyone
has any questions about Hummers, email me. If I don't know the answer, I
have plenty of contacts at the factory that I can ask! Julian Burke
