.......my M37 is making a growling noise, transmission, transfer? Does
anyone else have a similiar problem?
Sounds normal to me. Is this a new noise? Are you losing fluid?
Of course new noises in a well lubricated transfer are evil and suggest
imminent failure of the output shaft bearings.
Do you have lockout hubs? I put mine on and front diff noise and prop shaft
noise went to zero, plus there wasn't that thing spinning in the transfer
too, so it got a lot quieter, handled better, stopped leaking at the
knuckles....
My M37s all make noises of one sort or another. The one I drive the most is
also the noisiest, since the transfer leaks and the guy who had it before me
probably drove it a lot with insufficient lube. As an experiment, I drove it
with the cover off (see below)and canvas top off with hubs engaged and
disengaged in an engine off downhill coast, then greased or topped off
everything and repeated the test. Unbelieveable difference.
There are several new lubes out, some older "climbing gear" lubes, too.
Several list members have experimented with synthetics and reported less
rolling friction and quieter operation, perhaps they could repeat their evals?
- I haven't bothered with mine because it hasn't gotten worse since I got
it, now that I keep it topped off.
Another driveline question is about transfer mounting and alignment, - and
may not work for everybody.
I take off the trans floor cover, and drive the thing while watching the
transmission, short shaft, and have somebody look under and back to watch the
transfer for movement and alignment. What a mechanical chorus!
A bit more dangerous I suppose, but educational and enlightening.
