[MV] Vehicle Identification

I have a '61 M38A1 (my first) and am my way to restoring it back to it's
original beauty. My problem is I would like to know where it came from, but
only have the DMV number and now the serial number from the hood as a
reference. I don't have the dash or patent data tags. Can anyone out there
give me a direction on where to research to possibly find out where this jeep
may have come from??? I can do a search through the Dept. of Motor Vehicles,
but this will only give me the civilian side of things...........Thanks in
advance!
