It turned out not to be a tough problem. However, the listers kept telling me check the ground, and even though I thought I had, I went back
and checked again. They were right. It just wasn't obvious. The negative cable to battery clamp had come loose. Simple, but it kept me from
checking other stuff and wasting my time.
