[MV] Replacing M151 transfer case

I replaced my M151A1 transfer case only. There are three gears, the top one
slides on the shaft from the trasmission. The other two remain with the
transfer case. I did not swap the top gear. My problem is that when I let up
off the gas I hear a loud gear noise reflecting back to the differential. (
The entire rear end was repaired including wheel bearings.) It is as quiet as
a mouse when driving forward. Should I have also replaced that top gear that
belonged in the new used transfer case.? Has anyone had experience replacing
transfer cases?
