Listers,
I recently purchased an M37B1 that was a fire company truck. It is
equipped with a 12 volt red rotating beacon and several clearance
lights on the hard cab. It has a snow plow that uses a 12 volt
hydraulic unit to raise the blade & 12 volt (separate from the original
wiring) turn signals. The truck retains all of the 24 volt system for
the original lights, instruments, ignition, starter and generator.
The truck has a 12 volt alternator mounted very nicely above the
24 volt generator. A matched set of v-belts drive these and the
water pump. The water pump and crankshaft pulleys are 4-groove.
A main wire from the alternator goes to a fuse block for all of the
12 volt lights, heater and a solenoid for the winch motor. The
fuel gauge has been removed and a 12 volt voltage indicator was
installed in its' place. Heavy wiring goes from the 12 volt battery
mounted under the seat to the solenoid and winch motor. A
rather unique way of having two voltage systems in service. I'm
posting it as a matter of interest as we have had many discussions
on how to operate 12 volt accessories in a 24 volt system. No, I
don't think this is the ideal or correct way, just a way that it was
accomplished.
