You are correct about the "N" meaning 4 cyl tractor motor. However, the
first number is the year starting with 1938( when Ford started this
numbering system) ie. 9=1939 0=1940.
EXCEPT....for the tractor!!! 8N = 1948, 9N = 1939 , 0N = 1940,
1N =1941 up to about 1948. In the tractors, this designation was a model
number and continued on longer than the year it represented. ie. the 9N
tractor continued on until replaced by the 8N. If for example, the number
was 1NC it would mean;
1 = 1941
N = 4 cyl (tractor) motor
C = Commercial (pick up truck)

Now lets confuse the issue (in respect to standard vehicles) ........A "G"
used as the SECOND letter (or digit) would indicate the vehicle has a
90hp six cylinder motor ie. 1GA would mean;
1 = 1941 model
G = 6 cyl motor
A = automobile

If the whole number starts with a "C" (C1GA) it means it was a Canadian
built vehicle.
If the number has a "F" after it, it means the vehicle is right hand drive
ie. C1GAF

Hey, simple, right ! If you have the code books!
Oh yea, after 1947 the digit 4 was added to the year ie. 48GA = 1948 6
cyl auto (except for the tractors)
