I would say the restriction is there due to the sprage style front axle drive
system on some trucks. If you did not disconnect the drive shaft to the rear
and lifted the front, when you started to move and the rear axles started
turning and the front doesn't it would engage the front and they would begin
to turn. With a wheel lift wrecker that could create a big problem when the
front wheels start turning in the forks. In a flat tow situation every thing
is turning at the same rate and therefor nothing is engaging. Follow?
