Clinton,
All of the shovels in a recent batch of parts I got from a DRMO sale were
painted Forest Green. The shovels are M Series. The paint is rather thick
and not at all smooth. You did not mention era, but I see you have a '42.
I have WWII photographs of Jeeps showing both completely painted and
also unpainted wooden handles. I believe that the axe and shovel were
painted with the o.d. paint of the era. I read someplace that the need for
rapid production resulted in pioneer tools being dipped in paint, then
hung to drip-dry.
