I spent 6 weeks there in 1981 for a red flag exercise providing
commonications with the Texas Air National Guard. They were rotating both
Air Guard and AF Reserve Fighter units through there for 6 weeks. then it
was just called Wendover Auxialry Field AAF. It is 125 miles due west of
Salt Lake City and was the home to the State Line Casino and one or two
smaller casinos. the only parts of the base left were the airstrips, tower,
2 or 3 hangers, and very few less than 15 orignal buildings. We did make it
habitable even got the old base swiming pool operational. There wasn't any
sort of marker that indicated the signifganece of the field in the ending of
the war. One hanger did have some electrical devices that could best be
described as something from a 50's sci-fi movie. Big old elctrodes for some
sort of lighting experiments or so we were told. Most of the locals were
happy to see us, Except for the deputy sheriff, he was also the local FAA
safety person, head of security for the casinos, and based on some late
night aircraft activity maybe something else. And just to keep this on
track one thing we learned early on was if we took a duece of the pavement
WE DID NOT STOP UNTIL WE WERE BACK ON THE HARDTOP!
