<< An effective rust and paint removal process using Caustic Soda and a
battery
charger >>
I've successfully used the battery charger method of rust removal. The most
important aspect of the liquid used is that it must be electrically
conductive. It does not need to be caustic or corrosive. I use Arm and Hammer
Washing Soda available as a clothes washing additive in the soap section of
the grocery store. This process is safe to the item being treated, and except
for the dangers of using a battery charger around a tank of liquid, it's safe
for the operator. It does get messy: all the crud accumulates on the positive
electrode plate and the liquid gets pretty nasty. Probably best done outside.
I have also used this as a spot remover by using a liquid soaked sponge on
the positive side and just attaching the negative to the body. That works in
about 30 minutes. There are some web sites dedicated to this process. I'll
try to locate them.
