The 1942 GPW at the Birmingham International Car Show was a great success.
The organizer and the contact man for the antique cars said they thought it
was the most popular display of the antique car section. They both said they
didn't realise how much interest there was in the old army vehicles.
Planning on inviting me again next year. Score a BIG ONE for the MV
collectors. Due to time constraints (read my wife), I couldn't be with the
jeep the whole weekend, just Sunday afternoon. Talked with a lot of nice
folks, and answered the standard questions. (Yes, I've seen the TV show "The
Rat Patrol". Yes I've seen "Saving Private Ryan" and yes that's a real
German vehicle with the motorcycle/halftrack. No the machine gun does not
fire. Yes Ford really did make them in World War Two.) Also talked with a
couple of incredibly stupid people (No they weren't used in the Civil War
{for the non-US that was 1860-1865}. No, I didn't just add the Ford name to
the rear of the jeep. No, AMC did not design and build WWII jeeps.) Didn't
really "win" anything, but some new respect and a lot of interest in old OD
stuff. Got some leads on where some old rusty junk is located. Also a lady
is suppose to call me with some free "walkie talkies" that she found in her
father-in law's basement, and she doesn't want to throw them away.
