I tow mine (48 CJ2A) all the time with front lockouts disengaged, out of
gear, transfer case in neutral. Be sure you have some one observe the
vehicle closely while travelling at speed because SOMETIMES a worn or poorly
balanced front drive shaft and front end problems will not show up when the
vehicle is pulling itself under its own power, only when towed!

Buy a cheap M151 blackout light guard and light unit, pull the guts out and
stick in a lamp unit from Auto-Zone of the appropriate voltage. It will
look and work fine and is really cheap to do. I substituted a 12v halogen
teardrop spotlight in place of blackout light, because I go off road and the
extra light is useful. I bought it out of JC Whitney 8 years ago, and it
still works great!
