Bill:
I see you've gotten lots of free advice on your lug nut problem. As I
see it, the impact deal is the best and easiest way, BUT if your set up
is like mine and you don't have a very large compressor and tank, it
probably won't have enough power to do the job. I would suggest the
idea of driving to or calling a truck tire repair service to be the
fastest, safest and easiest although more expensive.
Here is an alternative method that I saw done once on a truck wheel with
frozen lug nut - I don't recommend it and it's probably not very safe,
but it worked in this case. It kind of goes along with the USMC
philosophy of "doing more with less" out of necessity. The guy used the
biggest breakover bar he had and put about a 6 foot piece of pipe over
the end positioned so that the end of the pipe touched the ground and
then just backed the truck up to apply pressure.
In the case of left hand thread, I guess you'd have to pull forward
instead, but you get the idea. The truck didn't have to move but a
couple of inches to break it loose.
Sometime,I'll tell you the story about how we got the frozen not off the
pintle hitch on my M-37 - this is complicated by the proximity to the
gas tank which makes it hard to get a wrench on the nut and makes the
torch method more dangerous.
Good Luck,
Steve
