They kept the fuel and oil warm by draining the tanks and warming it over fires and
then replacing it in the tanks and also by running the the engines quite frequently.
I don't think that economy of fuel was necessarily the main reason for tank engines,
it was that the process for making diesel is much less complicated than making
gasoline, plus aviation gas was a priority.
