I guess the saying, 'they don't build em like they used to' is true. Pulled
the valve cover off, entire valve train looks to be in perfect shape, no
corrosion, no sludge, clean as a whistle. Drained the oil, and it was
pretty clean, no water contamination or anything. Put fresh oil in, removed
distributor, and ran the oil pump with a drill. It seemed to pump just
fine, with fresh oil dribbling out of the rocker arms after about 30 sec of
pumping. I had poured some marvel mystery oil (great stuff) into each
cylinder a couple of days ago, so we decided to go ahead and bump it over to
see if it would turn. Motor turned over very easily (with plugs out) with
no strange noises. Replaced valve cover (got a gasket at Autozone, isn't
that incredible?) Put the distributor back in, put new plugs and wires on,
took the carb off, gave it a minor cleaning, put it back on. Poured a
little bit of gas with a smidgeon of two stroke oil in it in the carb, gave
it a couple of shots of ether, and she fired right up, just like that!
Rigged up an aux. gas tank using a clean coolant overflow bottle, hung it
from the hood, plumbed it into the fuel pump and filled up the fuel line
from the carb to the pump. Little more gas in the carb, and she starts up
again and settles into a nice smooth idle at about 600 rpm. No knocks,
excessive valve train noise, or smoke, etc. From a truck that hasn't been
touched in 12 years. Amazing.....I guess living in near desert conditions
does have it's advantages....this somehow makes the wind and the dust a
little less annoying :-)
