Colin wrote a great "check list" for buying a GPW. I should note
here that not all GPW motors had a GPW (Ford foundry) block. Starting in
September 1942 Ford also used blocks purchased from the Wilson Foundry in
Ohio. Wilson produced the motor blocks used in the Willys MB. The Wilson
blocks purchased by Ford look the same as Willys blocks with the same
casting numbers. However, after they were assembled at the Rouge Motor
building they were stamped with a GPW motor number. By February 1943, over
5,463 Wilson blocks were received. I can only wonder how many correct GPW
blocks have been replaced by restorers because they thought the block was a
Willys one!
