Just to pipe in here, the clear stuff you buy at the hardware store called
lamp oil (or similar), for example Lamplighter Farms brand, is actually OMS
(oderless mineral spirits) which is also what charcoal lighter fluid is. My
father used to be with Mobil Oil, industial products div and they sold
tankers full of OMS to these places. I wonder if oms would burn in my
Diesel?????

I burn straight #1 in the winter but as far as I know with larger engines
you do not want to do that. #1 is lighter (hydrocarbon chain speaking that
is) and I find that the engine starts better, but you do consume more.
Diesel around here is blended in the winter anyway, anything from 70/30 to
50/50 (#2/#1). Not sure about your comment about #2 being dirtier however.
