I suppose everything is relative....

Standing at the winch, feeding or tugging cable by hand anto a loaded
drum, just has to be less safe than sitting in the cab pulling a
lever......

I suppose they would have their applications, like your cable pulling, but
few of them would be superior to the good old drum.
