I purchased a '49 CJ3A about 4 years ago w/o a title. All I got was a
handwritten bill of sale. I took that BOS to the court house for a
hearing. I was sworn in, (after waiting all morning) asked a couple of
questions like was this vehicle stolen, to the best of my knowledge.
(It was a farm Jeep for the past 20 years, so the body was shot, what I
got was a frame and drive train) I was awarded title with a court
order.
At the time, it seemed like the least beaurocratic(sp) way to do
things. My other options were to title it as a kit car, or my local
notary offers to do the leg work and obtain a title for me. The kit car
wuldn't have listed it as what it really was and the notaries way would
have taken about 4 months and cost in the neighborhood of 200.
What I have learned is that when I title my '54 M38A1, I'm going use a
title service. (the body is '54, the frame is '53 and the engine is
'58...I know, I know, It's not authentic but there are very few people
who would know the differance.
