Howdy,
First, thanks to all the guys who responded to my email about my MB tub.
Looks like I've got to so some thinking about how to proceed now.
Now for the problem at hand. My daily driver is a 1984 M1008 CUCV (Chevy
Blazer). I noticed a pulsating rubbing noise coming from my rear differential
when I had it under light acceleration. There is no power loss, vibration, or
other such problems, just the noise. I pulled the rear diff. cover tonight and
cleaned the oil out. Gross. I don't think it's ever been changed. It smelled a
little scorched. About 10 of the teeth on the ring gear had pitting on the outer
half. I don't know if it's damage from when it was a lawn ornament before I got
it. There was also some pitting on the top half of the diff. cover where the oil
is slung onto the cover.
Is this what is causing the noise from the rear diff. I've only had the
vehicle for 3000 miles, so is this a problem that will smooth out or should I go
ahead & replace the ring gear?
Thanks,
Brian Mead
