I did extensive engine dynamometer testing on synthetic versus regular oils. I compared 10W40 synthetic to 10W40 regular on the same engine using SAE test standards. I found the synthetic produced 6% more horsepower when the engine oil was 50 degrees below normal operating temperature, but no measureable difference when the engine was fully warmed up. The race cars I drive normally take about 3 laps to warm up, so this is a tremendous advantage. I also use synthetic in my racing transaxles. I have had to rebuild a transaxle because the synthetic oil apparently ran off the gears and the bearings rusted tight over the off season. I do not use synthetic in my MB or my street vehicles because I can not justify the expense and the possibility of internal components rusting scares me.
