Jim,

I think there is confusion here between the manufacturer's designation,
which was the same for all models ("Water Buffalo"), and the names given to
them in service, which differenciated between the unarmed ("Buffalo") and
the armed models ("Alligator").

The LVT4A WAS known as "Alligator" in the French Army in Indochina.
