Ok, laugh if you will...... I'm the proud, new owner of an M-43
ambulance (Canadian), with the 251 engine. It's a little, uh, slow.
Looks like a person needs to just leave it totally stock, or wind up
doing lots of stuff to it, but don't try to tweek it just a little.
If I put a different motor in it, it will go faster. Now, how do I
stop it? I put better brakes on it, or power assist brakes. Now, how do
I get the military tires to not skid? Civvy tires. Ah! Put different
gears in the rear differential! No, then they won't match the front
gears and 4WD would be impossible, without changing THOSE gears, as
well. $$$$$$$!
This vehicle is dual purpose. It is my truck, as well as a
collectable. Hence, every mod must be easily reversable. Any ideas out
there for some relatively easy mod that can bump the speed up a bit?
3000rpm gives about 52 mph or so. 40 mph sure sounds better on the
engine, though.
Anyone ever hear of an overdrive box that could be fit to it? Jim
