Air shift front axle ?

On my M54A1C 5 tonner, when I shift into either 1st gear or reverse, I
can hear an air actuated device engage/disengage.

Does this mean I have an air shift front axle?

Does that mean that in 1st or reverse I am in 6 wheel drive mode?

Just trying to clear up my confusion....
