JD,
I haven't done axles myself, but I've had them done and watched them being
done. They're tricky as all get-out to set up properly! My YJ mechanic has done
nothing but jeeps for almost 20 years, and when I had the gearsets in mine
changed, he fiddled with each diff for seemingly hours to get them just right.
I can do most things mechanical, but I wouldn't attempt a full differential
rebuild on my own - too much to go wrong!
If something's not actually broken inside your front diff, it's probably a case
of mismatched gears or the lash being badly out of adjustment. I don't know the
inside of an MB diff, but bearings can spin, too - I destroyed a rear end this
way once. A professional could probably tell you in an instant.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Never mind.
