David, not absolutely sure about an 81 CJ7, but by 17 year old son bought a
77 CJ7 and we needed some wheels just to roll it around in the shop. The M38
style wheels, which are basically the same as the early CJ2A, etc wheel will
fit, but they bind on the springs. We tried all the wheels I had in my shop,
MB/GPW combat wheels, M38, M38A1 all drug on the springs.

Also, just asked my son to verify this info and he passes along another tip.
Some of the CJ7's came with a Dana 300 transfer case. He says (and he's
pretty well "into" the CJ7's) that the Dana 300 can NOT be flat towed. The
drive from the engine causes the gears of the transfer case to be splashed
with oil, without the drive from the engine, no splash and no oil = no
transfer case in about 25-30 miles. Something to check into. Might just
need to seperate the drive shafts at the transfer case to be sure.

Good Luck, if you would like to talk directly with my son Pat Campbell, his
email is KF4YPJ@aol.com. He's out in the shop banging on swapping out the
front end of his CJ7 right now.
