Hi list,
Having returned to my Scout Car project for some "quality time" I decided
that I wanted some new nuts for securing the drive flanges to the hubs.
Sure, the old ones are still up to the job but they show signs of
age.....some minor pitting here and there; and they cleaned up OK, but
doggone it.....everything else is new!
Well, you would think that in a city the size of San Antonio I could just
stroll into just about any bolt & screw business, plunk down my money and
walk out with what I needed. Yeh....when barnyard animals start flying out
of my A**! Sinbad had it easier! My visitations to various suppliers and
inquiries for a simple unplated automotive-style 7/16x20 SAE nut resulted in
responses that ranged from zombie-like blank stares, complete with slack jaw
& drooling... (you know the look.....it's the same look that you get when
you ask to have your burger made with extra pickles and onions at
McDonalds)...to a rather manic, caffiene fueled, Daytona 500 monologue on
why I should use their new & improved product that only resembles what I
want because it happens to have the same thread size.........
......and you guys complain about the police! Sheeesh!
Well, I won the battle but I lost the war. I did find the nuts I
needed....but had to settle for plated, which brings me to this.... besides
the most obvious answer of having the nuts un-plated at a chrome shop,
(thereby turning a sows ear into a silk purse) what other method might I use
to be sure that paint sticks to these? Don't tell me about self-etching
primer. Acid etching would be the most obvious answer but what to use? I
have some phosphoric acid in a x-percent solution around here somewhere, or,
if I am to believe what I read in 'Hints from Heloise', this might be just
one more use for vinegar (since according to her, it works for absolutely
everything else.) Anyone know of a reputable supplier for unplated
hardware?
Regards, from Texas (where every man's nuts are plated),
TJ
