I think the M44-series 2.5-ton manuals even say to do it that way. I
used chassis grease on a paper hub gasket on my deuce, as I recall,
and I doubt I would have done that if my books hadn't said to, since I
have about 49+ years less experience than some of our other esteemed
list members... :-)

I'm a bit surprised that Permatex ruins the gasket, though. A friend
of mine who's in the warbird crowd routinely uses this black goop
called Tite-Seal on aviation gaskets (it looks and feels exactly like
Permatex #2, but comes in a can), and he says he can often reuse
gaskets that would have to be scraped off otherwise. Maybe that only
works for thicker, stronger types of gaskets?
