Well, if 24 volt systems are unreliable compared to 12
volt systems, I'm converting all my 12 volt civilian
cars to 6 volts... I'll really have some electrical
reliability then!
Seriously though, I've seen more HMV's butchered by
owners doing poorly done 12 volt conversions to 6 volt
vehicles and 12 volt conversions to 24 volt vehicles.
With the support of this list and the many HMV parts
suppliers, I've been consistently able to get parts
cheaper than I could have at the local Pep Boys. These
are vehicles that were engineered to run on the
electrical systems they were made with and were
designed to operate reliably under harsh combat
conditions. I suggest that if you restore the factory
system to good operating condition you will be
extremely reliable. Maybe not as reliable as a Y2K
Honda, but don't forget you are driving a 50 year old
truck.
I own a WW2 Dodge truck right now that sat in a guys
back yard for 20 years without running because he
attempted a 12 volt alternator conversion without
realizing that the pulley widths were different. The
old generator and regulator were still in the back of
the truck when I bought it. He never did get it
running... Anyone want to buy an alternator?
