Hi All..

Was just reading the latest issue of Military Vehicles Oct 2001 Issue, an in the Reader Photo's section on Page 66 I was pleasantly surprised to see pictures of two gun trucks named 'Uncle Meat" and the "Baby Sitter"!!! I remember these two trucks VERY well while I was at PhuBai in Spring of 1972 during the Easter Offensive!

I was part of the Naval Security Group contingent with the Army's ASA 8th RRFS, and on more than one occasion during sapper alerts "Uncle Meat's" rear wheels were no more than 4' from my helmet when it was backed up above (and over!) my position in the trench line next to the baseball field on the "navy" side!

Hmmm, I wonder how many Army dudes even knew there was a 100-man Naval contingent at the RRFS working in "Ops"? Most of the Army dudes all saluted us Naval Petty Officers cuz the "Crows" on our fatigue lapels and covers looked like we were full bird Colonels! .. LOL.. .

Whenever one of the gun trucks, (usually Uncle Meat, sometimes the Baby Sitter, and I believe there was a 3rd gun truck whose name escapes me, Baby Doll?), pulled up behind our positions in the trench we would move at least 10 meters away since we knew the VC or Regular NVA would be using the gun truck as a target for their RPG rounds. Alot happened in Phu Bai
during the April/May/June timeframe!

So.. If anyone knows or can contact the photographer, Scott Davis or John Woolridge who submitted the photo feel free to pass along that someone here on the mil-veh lists remembers those two trucks very well.. I even had a VERY good pic of Uncle Meat, but lost it years ago.

In any event, a little historical anecdote from some pix in the Mil-Veh magazine! I will post this in some other forums hoping that former ASA/NSG vets will remember!

Re's...
