David and others,
Thanks for the information. Interestingly, before I saw these responses,
I checked www.amgeneralcorp.com and looked at the company history page.
Here's what it had to say:
"......... In 1970 American Motors Corporation purchased the Kaiser Jeep
Corporation from Kaiser Industries. The Defense and Government Products
Division became the General Products Division of the Jeep Corporation.
Shortly after the purchase, the Division's Toledo executive offices and
Dearborn engineering operations were relocated to Wayne, Michigan.
On April 1, 1971, the Division was incorporated as AM General Corporation, a
wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Motors Corporation................ "
That made me curious, so I searched GL for "general products". I got 19
hits on trucks, none of which mentioned American Motors. However, they did
say things like: "General Products Division of Jeep Corp", or "General
Products Division Jeep Corp". I always thought "General Products Division of
American Motors" was the correct name.
Has anyone else on the list ever seen a deuce with a nameplate that says
"General Products Division of Jeep Corporation" or something akin to that?
Thanks,
Neil
